Holy Orders is the sacrament by which bishops, priests and deacons are ordained and receive the power and grace to perform their sacred duties. The sacred rite by which orders are conferred is called ordination. The apostles were ordained by Jesus at the Last Supper so that others could share in his priesthood.
The Archdiocese of Portland ordains men to the Permanent Diaconate each spring. Ordinations to the Priesthood occur each June at the Cathedral of the Imaculate Conception, in Portland.
Ordination as a bishop happens only when a bishop is needed. It is the fullness of the Sacrament of Holy Orders. Once ordained a bishop, the elevation to the role of archbishop happens based on the location the bishop is assigned.
